Students have a chance to participate in a fundraiser that will benefit a local elementary school.

Members of Greek life will perform at Spring Sing to collect donations to be delivered to Westwood Elementary School’s library, 1701 Exchange Ave.

The annual fundraiser, hosted by Blue Key National Honor Society, is at 8 p.m. today in Petree Recital Hall in Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.

The society’s members will gather books and money at the event.

Spring Sing attendees are required to pay a small fee or provide a new or gently used children’s book at the event, said Jeff Poulin, president of Blue Key Honor Society.

Blue Key members choose a new philanthropic endeavor each year, he said.

“Blue Key focuses on leadership by putting on community events like Spring Sing,” said the entertainment business junior. “This year we designated our philanthropy to helping Westwood Elementary.”

The school’s library has an insufficient number of books, Poulin said, which is what sparked Blue Key members to accept the opportunity.

“We wanted to focus on the issue of literacy,” he said. “In doing some research, we realized that this would be the best to fulfill that, and it provides hands-on service for our members.

“We will also be reading the children those books at the end of the month.”

The rules regarding how you can form teams were updated this year, said Hailey Blanton, treasurer and secretary of Blue Key Honor Society.

“Organizations are able to combine groups this year because some were overpowered in the past,” she said.

Organizations can have a maximum of 75 people, she said. Kappa Phi sorority and Delta Alpha Chi fraternity are the only organizations collaborating.

Blue Key raised $300 for Young Women’s Christian Association and Ronald McDonald House at last year’s Spring Sing.
